Double Boiled Linseed Oil
A type of Refined Linseed Oil that has been modified to dry faster and is suitable for cold climates. The term "double boiled" refers to the process of heating the linseed oil twice, typically in the presence of certain metallic drying agents, such as lead or manganese, to promote oxidation and polymerization.
The heating process accelerates the polymerization of the oil, which causes it to thicken and dry more quickly when applied to surfaces. This makes double boiled linseed oil particularly suitable for use as a wood finish, where a faster drying time is desired.
Double boiled linseed oil is commonly used in woodworking and furniture finishing applications. It provides a durable and protective finish that enhances the natural beauty of wood while offering resistance to moisture, scratches, and wear.
It's worth noting that due to health and environmental concerns, the use of lead-based drying agents in linseed oil has been largely phased out in favor of safer alternatives, such as cobalt or manganese-based driers. As such, modern double boiled linseed oil formulations typically use these safer additives for the accelerated drying process. However, it's always important to check the composition of linseed oil products to ensure they meet safety standards and regulations.
